Winning on Yelp: A Small Business Guide (2027 Edition)

Winning on Yelp A Small Business Guide 2027 Edition

Table Of Contents

Yelp is no longer just a review site. In 2026 it became one of the main sources AI tools use to recommend local businesses, and that makes your Yelp reviews matter more for your small business than they have in years.

In July 2026 Yelp licensed its 330 million reviews and 8 million business listings to OpenAI, and Yelp says its ratings and reviews now power ChatGPT’s local recommendations (Yelp Q2 2026 letter). Yelp’s own data also feeds Perplexity and Apple Maps. When a local customer asks an AI tool “who’s a good plumber near me,” there is a good chance Yelp is where the answer comes from.

Yelp also plays by different rules than every other platform in this series. Yelp forbids asking customers for reviews. No texts, no emails, no “leave us a review” cards. Break that rule and Yelp can hide the reviews or put a warning on your page.

So the core rule here is different: claim your page, make it complete, give great service, reply to every review, and let Yelp users find you. Pay for ads only after the free foundation is strong.

Yelp is one piece of Halo One, the Norzer system for small business owners who want to get found on Google and recommended by AI. We will show you exactly where it fits.

More free guides for local businesses. This is one of several free platform guides we wrote for small business owners. Read them all: Angi, Houzz, Nextdoor, Thumbtack, and Yelp. More are on the way, so check back.

What changed since the 2026 edition

The biggest change is AI. Yelp data now powers ChatGPT’s local answers, and Yelp built its own AI assistant into the app.

How Yelp works in 2027

Yelp is a review platform first and a lead platform second. Your star rating, review count, and how recent your reviews are decide almost everything else.

For customers, Yelp is search, reviews, photos, quotes, bookings, and now an AI assistant that answers questions and books for them. Yelp’s data also shows up in places they never think of as Yelp: Apple Maps, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.

For your business, Yelp gives you:

  • A free business page you should always claim.
  • Request a Quote and messaging, so customers can contact you without calling.
  • Paid products on top: Yelp Ads, an upgraded page that removes competitor ads, the Verified License badge, and Yelp Guaranteed in some trades.
  • Yelp Host, an AI phone receptionist, as a paid add-on.

The recommendation software. Yelp’s automated filter decides which reviews count toward your rating. In 2025 it recommended about 70 percent of reviews and hid 17 percent in a “not recommended” section. Reviews from brand-new or one-review accounts are the most likely to be hidden. You cannot pay your way around it.

How it differs from the rest of this series. On Angi, Thumbtack, Houzz, and Nextdoor, you ask every customer for a review. On Yelp, you never ask. You earn reviews by being easy to find and worth talking about.

Who Yelp is for, and how to check your local market

Yelp covers more categories than any other platform in this series. Almost every small business that serves local customers should at least claim its page.

Strong fitWeaker fit
Restaurants, cafes, bars, food trucksB2B businesses with no consumer customers
Plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, contractorsIndustrial or wholesale trades
Salons, spas, nails, barbersBusinesses that run almost entirely on referrals
Dentists, doctors, vets, groomersVery small markets with little Yelp activity
Auto repair, detailing, movers
Consumer law (injury, family, DUI, estate)
Gyms, studios, tree service, landscaping

Check your local market in 10 minutes:

  1. Search Yelp for your service in your city, the way a customer would.
  2. Count how many competitors show up and note which ones are marked “Sponsored.”
  3. Check the top five: star rating, review count, and the date of their newest review.
  4. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for “the best [your service] in [your city]” and see whether Yelp-listed businesses come up. That tells you how much Yelp shapes AI answers in your area.

Yelp is busiest in larger cities. In smaller markets the free page still matters for Apple Maps and AI answers, even if ads are a harder sell.

Build your profile once, build it right

Your Yelp page now feeds Yelp’s AI assistant, ChatGPT, and Apple Maps, so every field you fill in gets read by more than people. Claim it free at Yelp for Business and match your Google Business Profile exactly.

The non-negotiables:

  • Claim, do not create. Yelp often has a page for you already. Claim it instead of making a duplicate.
  • Business name, address or service area, phone, hours: identical to your Google Business Profile and website. No keywords in the name.
  • Categories: up to three, as specific as possible. “Roofing” beats “Home Services.”
  • Description and specialties: written in plain sentences that lead with your USP, the reason a customer should pick you over the next listing. Name your real services and the neighborhoods you serve. Yelp’s AI search reads this to match conversational questions like “who can fix a leaking water heater this week.”
  • Photos: at least 10 real ones. Finished jobs, your crew, your truck, your shop. No stock photos.
  • Request a Quote and messaging: turn both on, with notifications to your phone.
  • Amenities and highlights: licensed, insured, free estimates, veteran-owned, and anything else that is true.
  • Questions and answers: fill in the common questions. Yelp’s assistant uses them to answer customers.

Watch for suggested edits. Anyone can suggest changes to your Yelp page. Check them weekly and reject anything wrong, especially hours and phone numbers.

Reviews on Yelp: earn them, never ask

Yelp’s rule is blunt: “Don’t ask anyone to review your business, be it customers, mailing list subscribers, friends, family, etc.” (Yelp). That includes follow-up emails after a survey, staff contests, and any discount or freebie. Yelp’s software may hide reviews that look prompted, and repeat offenders can get a Consumer Alert, a pop-up warning on their page. In 2025 Yelp issued 128 alerts for paid or incentivized reviews alone (Yelp Trust and Safety Report).

So where does the Norzer review ask go? To Google. Every other guide in this series has you ask each customer: “If you could leave us a review and discuss in a few sentences what we did for you and how it went, we would appreciate it.” Keep doing that, but send the link to your Google Business Profile, never to Yelp.

How to earn Yelp reviews without asking:

  • Be easy to find. A complete page, accurate hours, and real photos put you in front of active Yelp users, the people most likely to review.
  • Show you are on Yelp. Yelp offers its own business badges and window stickers. A Yelp badge on your website and a sticker on the door tell Yelp users where to find you without asking anything.
  • Give people something specific to talk about. A same-day fix, a clean job site, a follow-up call the next week. Specific experiences turn into specific reviews.
  • Never have customers review from your shop’s Wi-Fi. Reviews posted from your business’s internet connection can be flagged.

Reply to every review within two business days. This is the one review job you fully control on Yelp, and every future customer reads your replies.

  • Positive reviews: thank them by name and mention something specific about the job.
  • Negative reviews: reply within a day, stay calm, acknowledge the problem, and offer a phone number to fix it. Your reply is written for the next 500 readers, not just the reviewer.
  • Reviews that break Yelp’s rules (a competitor, someone who never used you, threats): report them to Yelp. Do not argue in public.

Check your “not recommended” reviews monthly. You cannot move them, but if most of your hidden reviews come from first-time Yelp accounts, your customers simply are not active Yelp users. Keep the page strong for Apple Maps and AI, and put your review energy into Google.

The review filter, ranking, and Yelp’s AI

Yelp does not publish its ranking formula. These are the factors Yelp points to and that businesses have long observed.

What moves you up in Yelp search:

  • Recommended reviews and star rating. The biggest factor.
  • Recency. A business with steady recent reviews beats one with a big pile from three years ago.
  • Profile completeness and category accuracy. Every field filled, the most specific categories.
  • Responsiveness. How fast you answer messages and Request a Quote inquiries.
  • Fresh photos. New photos signal an active business.
  • Paid placement. Ads put you above the organic results, but they do not change your organic rank.

What the filter tends to hide (from long-observed patterns, since Yelp does not publish the formula): reviews from brand-new or one-review accounts, reviews posted from the business’s own internet connection, sudden bursts of reviews, and reviews that look prompted. Negative and positive reviews are filtered by the same rules, and advertising does not change the filter.

Yelp’s AI now decides what customers see. The new Yelp Assistant, relaunched April 21, 2026, is “powered by hundreds of millions of reviews, photos and detailed business information” and “surfaces real user-generated content from first-hand experiences in answers” (Yelp). In plain terms: when a customer asks Yelp’s AI “who can fix my AC today,” it quotes your reviews. Reviews that mention a specific service, a city, and an outcome give it something to quote.

Badges:

  • Verified License: a badge showing Yelp checked your trade license. It is tied to advertising and available in select states and trades.
  • Yelp Guaranteed: a customer protection badge in some home service categories, also tied to paid packages. 2026 contractor reports put its leads at roughly $30 to $75 each (NextPhone).

Ask your Yelp rep which of these your category and state qualify for, and get the cost in writing.

Yelp Ads and what they really cost

Yelp Ads are pay-per-click with a monthly budget. Run them only after your page is strong: 4.0 stars or better and at least 10 recommended reviews. Ads send more people to your page, and a weak page loses them faster.

Where your ads show: above organic results, on competitors’ pages, and across Yelp’s partner sites. On a free page, competitors’ ads show on your page. The only way to remove them is to pay for Yelp’s upgraded page.

What it costs. Yelp does not publish a rate card and negotiates by market and category. 2026 contractor reports:

Trade competitionReported monthly budget
Lower (pressure washing, window cleaning)$300 to $600
Middle (general contractors, painters)$500 to $900
Higher (HVAC, plumbing, electrical)$800 to $1,500 or more

Source: NextPhone, September 2026. Your quote may be higher or lower.

Read the terms. Contractors in published reviews describe annual commitments on some packages. Before you sign, ask Yelp in writing: Is there a contract term? Does it auto-renew? How do I cancel?

Answer the phone. Invoca data cited in that same 2026 report says 74 percent of home service calls go unanswered. Paying for clicks that ring an unanswered phone is the most expensive mistake on Yelp. If you cannot answer, look at an answering service or Yelp’s own AI receptionist before you buy ads.

The real math

On Yelp you pay for clicks, not jobs. The only number that matters is what each booked job costs you:

\text{Cost per booked job} = \frac{\text{Monthly ad spend}}{\text{Leads} \times \text{Booking rate}}

Here is the same $600 a month and the same 20 leads, with only one thing changing: how fast you respond. These are example numbers to show the math, not Yelp averages.

How you respondBooking rateJobs bookedCost per booked job
Voicemail, reply the next day15%3$200
Reply within the hour30%6$100
Phone answered live, messages answered in 5 minutes45%9$67

Same budget, same leads, a third of the cost per job. That is why we tell clients to fix response time before they touch their ad budget.

Then check it against your job value. If an average job brings you $300 in gross profit and you pay $200 to book it, you keep $100. At $67 a job, you keep $233. Know both numbers before you renew.

How Yelp affects your Google and AI search results

Of every platform in this series, Yelp has the most direct line into AI answers. Your Yelp reviews are no longer just read on Yelp. They are read by the AI tools your customers ask for recommendations.

Direct AI connections

  • ChatGPT. Yelp licensed its 330 million reviews and 8 million listings to OpenAI in July 2026, and says its ratings and reviews now power ChatGPT’s local recommendations (Yelp Q2 2026 letter). Restaurant reservations through Yelp already work inside ChatGPT, and Yelp has said Request a Quote is next.
  • Perplexity and Apple Maps. Both use Yelp data for local business info and reviews. If your Yelp page is wrong, it can be wrong in those places too.
  • Yelp Assistant. Yelp’s own AI quotes real reviews when it answers customers inside the Yelp app.

Regular AI and Google search

Even without those deals, AI tools cite Yelp more than almost any other directory. BrightLocal’s August 2026 study of 1.9 million AI citations found Yelp is ChatGPT’s most used source (BrightLocal):

SourceShare of AI citations
Google Business Profile28.6%
Yelp9.5%
Facebook2.2%

A separate study of 28 million AI responses in Q4 2025 counted 512,680 Yelp citations, 3.4 times more than the next directory, the BBB (PPC Land).

The same BrightLocal study found that about 93 percent of the domains AI cited were business websites. That is your Entity Home. Yelp gets you mentioned. Your website is where the AI goes to confirm you.

On Google, your Yelp page often ranks on page one for your business name and for “best [service] in [city]” searches. It is one of the citations Google checks to confirm your name, address, and phone match.

Reviews are the signal that is growing

The 2026 Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 local search experts named the biggest change as “an increased importance of review signals and behavioural signals,” and 3 of the top 5 AI search visibility factors were citation factors (Whitespark). BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer survey found 45 percent of people now use AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6 percent (BrightLocal).

What that means for you

  • Yelp is a citation that has to match. Same name, address, phone, and hours as your Google Business Profile and website. A mismatch on Yelp now spreads to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Apple Maps.
  • Reviews on two tracks. Earn Yelp reviews without asking, and reply to every one. Ask every customer for a Google review using the Norzer ask. Together they cover the two sources AI cites most.
  • Customer language becomes search language. A Yelp review that says “they replaced our water heater in Mid City the same afternoon” gives AI exactly what it needs to recommend you for that job in Baton Rouge. Make the job memorable enough that people describe it.
  • Your website closes the loop. Put your Yelp badge and rating on your site and link to your Yelp page. AI sees the same business, the same story, everywhere it looks.

Halo One: where Yelp fits in your local system

Halo One is built on four pillars. Yelp lives in Niche Authority, but it touches all four, and each pillar is the hand that feeds the others.

PillarWhat Yelp gives itWhat it gives Yelp
Entity Home (your website)A trusted citation and real reviews pointing back to youThe facts Yelp should match, plus a Yelp badge that sends visitors to your page
Google Business ProfileMatching business info that confirms you are realThe place your Norzer review ask goes, since Yelp forbids asking
Niche AuthorityThe most cited directory in AI answersConsistent listings everywhere else, so Yelp is never the odd one out
Digital PresenceReviews and photos worth sharingSocial posts and video that make people look you up

One finished job, start to finish:

  1. A customer in Baton Rouge asks ChatGPT for an AC repair company. ChatGPT pulls your Yelp rating and reviews.
  2. The customer checks your website and Google profile. Same name, same phone, same story.
  3. You answer the phone live and book the job the same day.
  4. You do the work well and ask for a Google review using the Norzer ask.
  5. The customer, already a Yelp user, also posts a Yelp review on their own. You reply to both.
  6. The next AI answer has two fresh reviews to quote. The loop closes.

Where Norzer comes in. We keep your Yelp page matched to your website and Google Business Profile, watch for suggested edits, and track whether Yelp ads are paying off before you renew. We build the website that AI uses to confirm you, and we run the Google review process Yelp will not let you run on Yelp.

Common mistakes local businesses make on Yelp

  • Asking for Yelp reviews. Even politely, even once. It can get reviews hidden and a warning put on your page.
  • Never claiming the page. Yelp probably has one for you already, with your wrong hours and no photos, feeding ChatGPT and Apple Maps.
  • Info that does not match Google. An old phone number or address on Yelp now spreads to AI answers.
  • Arguing with a bad review. Every future customer reads your reply. Stay calm and take it offline.
  • Buying ads on a weak page. Under 4.0 stars or under 10 recommended reviews, ads mostly pay to show people why not to call.
  • Signing without reading the terms. Ask about contract length, auto-renewal, and cancellation in writing.
  • Paying for clicks nobody answers. Fix response time first. The math section shows why.
  • Ignoring suggested edits. Anyone can suggest new hours or a new phone number. Check weekly.

Your Yelp routine

How oftenWhat to do
WeeklyReply to every new review. Check messages and Request a Quote response times. Approve or reject suggested edits.
MonthlyAdd 3 to 5 new real photos. Check your “not recommended” reviews for patterns. If you run ads, figure cost per booked job. Confirm your info still matches Google and your website.
QuarterlyAsk ChatGPT and Perplexity for the best [your service] in [your city] and see if you show up. Review ad terms and renewal dates. Update your description, specialties, and Q&A for any new services.

Caveats

  • Yelp does not publish its ranking or filter formula. The filter patterns in this guide come from long-observed behavior and Yelp’s own general guidance, not a published rulebook.
  • Most figures are Yelp’s own. The OpenAI deal, Yelp Assistant results, Yelp Host numbers, and Trust and Safety numbers come from Yelp’s filings and press releases.
  • Ad pricing is reported, not published. The budget ranges come from 2026 contractor reports. Yelp negotiates by market and category.
  • The AI picture is new. We wrote this guide in late 2026, only a few months after the OpenAI deal, so there is no solid data yet on how many leads it sends small businesses. We will update it in the next edition.
  • AI citation studies measure mentions, not jobs. A citation is a chance to be chosen, not a booked customer.

Your next move

Do this today: search Yelp for your business name. If the page is not claimed, claim it. If it is, check that your phone number and hours match your Google Business Profile exactly.
