Table Of Contents

Most local SEO checks look at the places you control: your website, your Google Business Profile, your directory listings. But Google and AI tools also look at what the rest of the web says about you, and you may never have checked.

This free prompt does that check. It sends an AI deep research tool out to find your independent digital footprint: the records and mentions that exist outside your own accounts.

What it is

A one-paragraph prompt you paste into an AI tool with deep research mode turned on. It searches the live web for your business and reports what it finds.

What it does

It looks for three things:

  • State business registration records. Does the name your state has on file match the name you use everywhere else? A mismatch confuses Google and can cause trouble with your Google Business Profile.
  • Mentions on non-directory websites. Has anyone outside of directories, like local news sites or blogs, ever written about you? Those mentions are proof that you are a real business people talk about, not just one that is listed.
  • Other locations or business names tied to your phone number. If your number is connected to an old business name or a different city, Google may be confused about who and where you are. Any finding here is a problem to fix.

How to use it

  1. Open your AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini) and turn on deep research mode. It may be called Deep Research or Research.
  2. Copy the prompt below and fill in your business name, your city, and your phone number.
  3. Run it. Deep research takes a few minutes, but it goes far past the first page of Google.
  4. Write down what you find. Note any mismatch between your state registration and your business name, any old names or other cities tied to your phone number, and any outside mentions you did not know about.
  5. Mark problems in red. A conflicting name or location is worth fixing first.
  6. Verify anything odd. AI can be confidently wrong. Check any surprising result at the source before you act on it.

The prompt

Search the live web for [BUSINESS NAME] in [CITY]. Provide a summary of their independent digital footprint. Specifically flag: 1) any state business registration records, 2) mentions of this business on non-directory websites like local news or blogs, and 3) any other geographic locations or alternate business names tied to their phone number, [PHONE NUMBER].

What to do with the results

  • Registered name does not match your everyday name: decide which name is correct, then make your website, Google Business Profile, and listings match it. If you are legally operating under a different name, look into filing a DBA.
  • Old name or other city tied to your phone number: find where it appears and correct it at the source. Old directory listings are the most common cause.
  • No outside mentions: this is normal for many small businesses, and it is an opening. Sponsor a local team, join a community event, or offer a useful local resource, and earn those mentions.

Where this comes from

This prompt is from Halo One: The Small Business Playbook for Getting Found and Generating Real Leads from Google and AI Search (GEO), Chapter 1, check 8. The book walks through all 30 checks of the self-audit.
